Naturecan CBD: Our Honest Review

Naturecan CBD logo

If CBD was a celebrity, it would be called Naturecan. The Stockport (UK) based CBD company partnered with a number of UK celebrities, including ex-cricketer Freddie Flintoff, TV presenter Paddy McGuinness and ex-football player Jamie Redknapp.

Founded in 2019 by Andrew Duckworth, the former CEO of Myprotein, the world’s #1 online health & nutrition retailer, and Paul Finnegan, Naturecan is more than just a CBD brand. The company describes itself as a global wellness brand focused on offering a premium, safe and effective hemp derived CBD, as well as other health related products such as vitamins and minerals.

Naturecan’s hemp is grown in the USA (Oregon) and the company uses an ethanol (alcohol) extraction process to produce their broad-spectrum CBD products.

Unlike other companies who have primarily developed full-spectrum CBD products, Naturecan have focused on THC, THCa, THCv and CBDa free product ranges with an emphasis on broad-spectrum CBD and products containing a powerful amount of CBG (5% CBG and 5% CBD oil).

This focus on THC free product may be explained by the fact that they are keen to offer a product that is suitable for athletes, especially those undergoing frequent drug testing.

Naturecan joined the Association for The Cannabinoid Industry (ACI) and the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis (CMC) to help build a better supply chain and raise the standards of the CBD industry in the UK.

Table of Content

Naturecan CBD oil was tested by myself and the rest of the CBD Unboxed team for a period of 2 weeks. Our review of Naturecan CBD covers 7 key metrics and at the end of this article we also recommend what we believe to be the best CBD products from Naturecan:

So now you’re a bit more familiar with Naturecan, let’s dive into this review to see how the CBD Unboxed team rated their products.

As part of our Naturecan CBD review, we found that their CBD oil is the perfect option for athletes and those going through regular drug tests, as it’s a broad-spectrum product that contains no THC! It’s also incredibly effective when it comes to relieving pain, improving sleep and reducing stress as well as anxiety.

Naturecan CBD Review Score

8.5

Naturecan CBD has been officially tested and reviewed by the CBD Unboxed team. Products have not been gifted by the brand and as such, this review is 100% independent and based on our personal findings.

The CBD Unboxed Story

I founded CBD Unboxed because I suffer from bilateral femoroacetabular impingement (known as FAI), a painful condition in which extra bone grows on the head of the femur (hip joint), giving the bones an irregular shape.

Because they do not fit together perfectly, the bones rub against each other during movement. Over time this friction can damage the joint, causing pain and resulting in arthritis of the hip joint.

To manage my pain and to avoid relying on traditional painkillers which have known side effects, I turned to more natural products and found CBD to be a godsend. I have been using CBD for the past 3 years and want to share my experience, so you too can experience the health benefits of CBD which are wide ranging – from pain relief and improved sleep, to reduced anxiety and depression. If you want to find out more about how you could benefit from CBD, check out this article on the effects of CBD.

Our Review: Naturecan 10% CBD Oil

The test carried out by the CBD Unboxed team focused on Naturecan CBD Oil 1000mg (10% concentration with organic MCT oil carrier) which contains all the terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids, but is THC free, and as such benefits from the entourage effect.

The characteristics of their 10% broad-spectrum CBD oil are detailed below.

+ Size: 10ml Bottle
+ Strength: 10% CBD Oil (1000mg)
+ Type: Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil
+ Oil Carrier: MCT oil
+ Hemp Origin: USA (Oregon)
+ Extraction: Ethanol
+ Flavour: Unflavoured
+ Our Rating: 8.5 / 10
+ Price: £44.99 (Cost per Day: £1.10 for 20mg daily)

Naturecan CBD oil is made of broad-spectrum CBD and contains no artificial preservatives, no GMOs and no pesticides. Their broad-spectrum product has all the other all-natural hemp extracts such as CBN (Cannabinol), CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBT (Cannabitriol), as well as the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids which can be found in full-spectrum CBD, but they are free from THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBDa (Cannabidiolic acid).

During the two-week period, we took 20mg of CBD in the morning on an empty stomach, followed by 10mg at lunchtime and a further 10mg an hour before bedtime, giving us a total of 40mg of CBD per day.

For their broad-spectrum CBD, Naturecan have focused on maximising the CBD entourage effect – a physiological phenomenon wherein the properties of active hemp compounds appear to be more powerful when consumed together rather than by themselves individually – through the preservation of synergy between the plants cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids.

Their products are all derived from organic hemp plants that are grown under the highest agricultural directives in Oregon (USA) and their products are made in the USA.

Be aware that results may vary depending on your personal requirements so be sure to check the dosage recommendations before taking any CBD products.

So how well did Naturecan broad-spectrum CBD oil perform in our review?

Product Efficacy (8.5/10)

Excellent Analgesic Properties (Pain Relief)

Naturecan 10% broad-spectrum CBD oil has excellent analgesic (i.e. to relieve pain) and anti-inflammatory properties. The oil is left under the tongue for 30-60 seconds and absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. It gets to work within 30 minutes and in my case it has allowed me to completely stop taking traditional pain killers as it has provided me with the pain relief I hoped for from day one.

By taking 5 drops (20mg) of their 10% broad-spectrum CBD oil immediately after a tough workout in the morning (on an empty stomach), an additional 2.5 drops (10mg of CBD) just before lunch and 2.5 drops before bedtime, I experienced a significant reduction of my pain levels throughout the day.

In that respect, it has allowed me to simply just get on with my day without worrying too much about hip pain or discomfort. I’ve been able to remain active throughout the two weeks I’ve taken their CBD oil and even on days where I increased my physical activity, I was able to perform with little to no discomfort.

Immediately after I stopped taking Naturecan 10% broad-spectrum CBD oil at the end of the two-week product test, I noticed that my hip slowly started to be painful and stiff again, especially first thing in the morning and after my daily workout. After two or three days of not taking their CBD oil, the pain and discomfort had returned and my sleep was disrupted due to the pain, which clearly shows that Naturecan CBD products work. Period.

This CBD oil is up there with the best broad-spectrum CBD oils we have tested to date on CBD Unboxed and both myself and the team still use it quite regularly.

Whilst the 10% concentration did a pretty good job when it comes to pain relief, it would be interesting to test higher concentration products such as Naturecan 20% CBD oil or Naturecan 30% CBD oil to see how they perform especially when increasing daily physical activity.

Additional Effects

Whilst I experienced additional effects with other CBD oils in our Top 10, such as reduced stress and anxiety as well as better sleep, I did not experience any of those health benefits during our two-week product review.

This could simply be a by-product of what was happening the week I tested their CBD oil. My work schedule was a little quieter than usual and I had just come back from a vacation meaning that my overall stress levels were quite low.

I did however experience less muscle pain the day after my workouts and I was full of energy, so it may be that taking their CBD allowed me to recover faster. We’ve written an interesting article on the effects of CBD and in particular the link between CBD and muscle recovery.

So if your aim is to use CBD oil for pain relief – conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, headache disorders – then we would highly recommend you check out Naturecan CBD oils.

Taste (8/10)

Whilst the most popular way to consume CBD is by using CBD tincture (oil), they often have a more earthy, nutty, woody or grass-like taste which is down to the fact the product is natural, safe, and non-toxic.

Taste: A Nice Flavour Profile

When we first started taking Naturecan 10% CBD oil, we noticed that the colour of the oil is quite light, almost yellow(ish), which suggested a more palatable CBD oil. After taking it for two weeks, it is fair to say that the taste of hemp does come through but it is not too overpowering compared to full-spectrum CBD oil.

The pleasant taste can be explained by a few factors:

  • MCT oil: The oil carrier can play a major role in the taste of a CBD oil and since Naturecan CBD uses MCT oil instead of Hempseed oil, it does help with the taste as you do not have the bitter and earthy taste of the hemp coming through when you put in under your tongue.
  • Extraction Method: Unlike most of the other UK CBD companies who focus on CO2 extraction, Naturecan uses an alcohol extraction process in the form of ethanol. This may affect the flavour profile of their CBD oil, but it is hard to say to what extent exactly.
  • Broad-Spectrum: broad-spectrum CBD oils go through an additional refinement process which removes the unwanted THC, waxes, and chlorophyll. By removing the waxes and chlorophyll, the oil becomes a lot more palatable.

So all in all, Naturecan is not a bad tasting product at all and it’s a lot more palatable than some of the other full-spectrum CBD oils in our Top 10. Taste-wise, we’d say it’s on par with Provacan who also is quite gentle on the palette.

Flavoured CBD Oil Not Yet An Option

Whilst some of the CBD brands we have tested have launched flavoured CBD oils – for example Chocolate Mint CBD oil – Naturecan have so far focused on natural product which we completely understand. However, if you want to avoid products which have a grassy or earthy taste, you may want to look at their CBD capsules and CBD gummies.

Value for Money (8/10)

An Efficient & Well Priced CBD Oil

Naturecan CBD oil does not only perform well from an efficacy and taste standpoint, but it’s also quite an affordable product which comes in the middle of the pack when compared to other CBD oils in our Top 10.

A person between 150 and 240 lbs may need between 18mg and 27mg of CBD per day depending on the severity of their symptoms. A 10ml bottle of their 1000mg CBD oil (retail: £54.99) will therefore last between 37 and 55 days and cost between £0.99 and £1.48 per day (with free shipping), which we think is good value for money. It’s not the cheapest CBD on the market, but it’s definitely not the most expensive either, so we feel that based on its efficacy, this is fairly priced.

Based on 20mg of CBD per day, here’s how the top 10 CBD brands stack-up in terms of daily cost:

Strength Price Daily Cost
Love Hemp 10% £99.99 £0.66
Medterra 10% £99.99 £0.67
Honest Hemp 10% £34.99 £0.78
Holistic Hemp 10% £40.00 £0.91
Love CBD 10% £99.99 £1.00
Naturecan 10% £54.99 £1.10
Provacan 12% £69.95 £1.25
Hempura 10% £64.99 £1.30
Blessed CBD 10% £74.99 £1.50
Bud & Tender 10% £80.00 £1.60

So heavy CBD users will need to place an order with Naturecan every month or so, whilst mild users may be able to push this to 2 months.

Note: At the time of writing, Naturecan had a 20% discount, bringing the cost of their 10% CBD oil to just over £43.99 instead of £54.99.

Subscription Plans Available (Save 35%)

When ordering, you can go for a single bottle at the full retail price, or to get a better rate, choose one of their subscription plans. The savings are the same no matter what plan you choose giving 35% off on the single unit price.

Subscription Discount Price / Bottle
Single bottle None £54.99
2 weeks 35% £35.74
4 weeks 35% £35.74
8 weeks 35% £35.74
12 weeks 35% £35.74

Product Range (9/10)

Although Naturecan only launched in May 2019, they have developed one of the widest and most comprehensive range of products available in the market which is simply impressive for such a young company. This is certainly down to the fact that serial entrepreneur Andrew Duckworth is behind the business and is pushing to create a health brand rather than just a CBD brand.

They have focused on a comprehensive range of quality broad-spectrum products which are ideal for customers looking for THC free options.

Naturecan CBD Oil

The most popular product in the Naturecan range is their broad-spectrum CBD oil which is made with CBD from organically-grown US hemp (Oregon). Apart from CBD, the other ingredients are broad-spectrum terpenes and organic MCT oil (Medium Chain Triglyceride), which allows for a more effective and diffused absorption.

In the broad-spectrum CBD oil range, Naturecan currently focuses on eight different strengths – from 250mg (2.5%) to 4000mg (40%) – one of the highest concentrations of any hemp extract in the UK.

Regardless of the concentration, all their CBD oils contain all the natural hemp extracts such as CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) or CBT (Cannabicitran), as well as the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids. However, it’s THC, CBN & THCv free, meaning that you get no THC but still benefit from the entourage effect coming from other cannabinoids.

The below table summarises the concentration and amount of CBD per drop for each of the 8 strengths available (10ml bottles):

CBD (mg) % CBD / Drop*
250mg 2.5% 1mg
300mg 3% 1.25mg
500mg 5% 2mg
1000mg 10% 4mg
1500mg 15% 6mg
2000mg 20% 8mg
3000mg 30% 12mg
4000mg 40% 16mg

*Amount of CBD oil per drop = 0.025ml

Their 250mg CBD oil retails at £16.99 (£0.068 per mg), their 1000mg oil at £54.99 (£0.055 per mg) and their 4000mg oil at £149.99 (£0.037 per mg).

When comparing the price and strength of their broad-spectrum CBD products, going for a higher potency works out cheaper in the long run as a person using 20g of CBD per day will spend £0.74 per day using their 40% CBD oil and £1.36 per day when using their 2.5% oil, a saving of 45% when going for the higher potency oil.

Naturecan CBG Oil

If you want a truly differentiated oil, you may want to check out Naturecan’s CBG oil (Cannabigerol) which is known as the “mother of all cannabinoids”, and come in two different strengths:

For those of you who need a crash course in Cannabinoids, CBG is the original molecule found within the cannabis plant which all other cannabinoids, including CBD, are derived from. So CBG is not usually present in broad and full spectrum products as it is converted to CBD and other minor cannabinoids within the hemp plant as it grows.

However, by harvesting the plants early and developing their own extraction technology, the CBG has not yet had a chance to transform into other cannabinoids and they can harness its full power.

Why CBG instead of CBD? Recent studies have suggested that CBG has strong anti-inflammatory properties and binds incredibly well, possibly better than CBD, with both CB1 and CB2 receptors in our Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This helps enhance the effect of CBG on the endocannabinoid system, which has a direct impact on our mood, our sleep, appetite, or pain.

By developing a CBG only products which only contain CBG and MCT oil, as well as incorporating CBG in existing CBD oil with a 1:1 ratio, meaning that their 1000mg bottle will contain 500mg of CBD and 500mg of CBG, Naturecan hopes to drive the efficacy of its oil.

As the harvesting and extraction is slightly different, CBG products tend to be a little more expensive than their CBD counterparts. Their 10% CBG oil and 20% CBG oil retail at £64.99 and £109.99 respectively. In comparison, the equivalent CBD oils retail at £54.99 (10%) and £99.99 (20%) so you’ll have to spend an extra £10 per bottle to get your hands on their CBG oil.

Naturecan CBD Capsules

If the taste of CBD oil isn’t your thing or you would prefer not to take CBD using a dropper and leaving the oil under your tongue, then you may want to check out Naturecan CBD capsules, as you will be able to experience all the benefits of CBD without the downsides of CBD oil.

When buying their CBD capsules, be aware that the amount of CBD in each capsule may vary depending on which strength you go for and that certain products could contain additional ingredients such as curcumin or vitamins. Naturecan offers six different types of capsules:

  • Naturecan CBD oil capsules: you’ll have the choice or 10 or 25mg of CBD per capsule and bottles containing between 30 and 120 capsules. These capsules contain broad-spectrum CBD and are not suitable for vegans as the capsules are made from animal gelatine.
  • Naturecan CBD oil softgels with Vitamin C: you’ll get 10mg of broad-spectrum CBD plus over 100% of your daily NRV of vitamin C.
  • Naturecan Vegan CBD capsules: containing 10mg of CBD per capsule, with the capsule created with plant-based ingredients.
  • Naturecan Vegan CBD capsules with curcumin and D3: contain the same amount of CBD as their vegan capsules, but with added fast-absorbing curcumin and vitamin D3.
  • Naturecan Accelerator CBD capsules: If fast absorption is important to you when it comes to CBD capsules, then check out Naturecan’s accelerator CBD capsules which will deliver 16 times more CBD in the first hour compared to other CBD products.
  • Vegan CBD capsules with Astaxanthin: if you worry about your skin showing the signs of aging, then these CBD capsules may be for you as they contain astaxanthin, a naturally anti-aging ingredient which can help prevent skin sagging and wrinkles.

Choosing capsules is a great way to get your CBD intake and it’s incredibly travel friendly, the ideal solution for those who are always on the go.

As with other Naturecan products, their capsules are made with broad-spectrum CBD and contain no pesticides, herbicides, solvents or chemical fertilizers. They are sourced from organically grown, non-GMO, pesticide-free hemp plants that have been grown in the USA (Oregon) and have also been independently lab tested for potency and purity.

Note: As some of their gel capsules are made from bovine gelatine, they may not be vegan friendly. Be sure to choose their ‘vegan CBD capsules’.

Naturecan CBD Topicals

If your aim is to improve muscle recovery post workout, treat an inflamed muscle or tendon or simply to look after your skin, then we would recommend looking at Naturecan CBD balms, a range of multi-purpose cannabis-infused creams that contain CBD extracts of cannabis, as well as other organic ingredients that help to soothe and nourish the skin.

Their cooling menthol CBD muscle balm contains broad-spectrum CBD oil distillate (1%) and menthol crystals to provide a rapid cooling effect. This cream is perfect for joint and muscle support, especially after a tough workout or to ease minor skin irritations. The cream comes in a single strength of 300mg of CBD per 30ml pot, and costs £29.99.

Their chili heat CBD muscle balm also contains broad-spectrum CBD oil distillate (1%) as well as capsicum extract and comfrey oil extract to relieve inflammation and muscle pain with a gentle heat effect. The cream comes in a single strength of 300mg of CBD per 30ml pot, and also costs £29.99.

If you believe in homeopathic remedies, then you may want to check out their CBD + Arnica cream which contains CBD as well as arnica, a compound which has been sued for centuries in the treatment of inflammation, swelling and bruising. It retails at £29.99 for 300mg of CBD per 30ml pot.

However, whilst CBD creams are great, they are only for topical use and are often used in conjunction with other CBD products such as CBD oils or capsules.

Naturecan CBD Snacks

If you are the type of person who is always searching for new ways to get your daily dose of CBD, then you may want to check out Naturecan’s range of CBD snacks which includes gummies, brownies, cookies, chocolate as well as nut butter and CBD whey protein.

  • Naurecan CBD Gummies: Their CBD gummies contain 10mg of broad-spectrum CBD and are perfect for those who do not want to take CBD oil or swallow capsules. They also contains multiple cannabinoids that work together to produce the ‘entourage effect’. On top of their traditional gummies, Naturecan also has a range of CBD fruit gummies which contain 10mg of CBD and are loaded with real orange fruit juice.
  • Naturecan CBD Brownies: If you are looking for a treat that also contains CBD, then look no further than Naturecan’s CBD brownies which contain 25mg of broad-spectrum CBD per brownie and crammed with rich cocoa and decadent dark chocolate chips. Each 60g cookie contains 233 calories, 29g of carbohydrates of which 14g are sugar. So these are probably not the best if you’re trying to watch your sugar intake, but can make for a tasty afternoon or post workout snack.
  • Naturecan CBD Cookies: If you prefer the texture of cookies to that of brownies, then we have great news for you as Naturecan also offers CBD infused cookies. As with brownies, you’ll get 25mg of CBD per cookie. At 224 calories, 29g of carbohydrates of which 13g are sugar, it’s the perfect afternoon pick-me-up to a post-gym snack.
  • Naturecan CBD Chocolates: If you are looking for an edible with lower calorie and carbohydrates content, then Naturecan CBD chocolate are a great option. Each 10g of chocolate is loaded with 25mg of CBD, but only contains 56 calories and 5g of sugar for the milk version and 2.7g if you go for the dark chocolate version. Now you’re talking!
  • Naturecan CBD Peanut Butter: If like us you like a bit of crunchy peanut butter on toast for breakfast or mid-morning snack, then do yourself a favour and forget about your supermarket PB and go for Naturecan’s nut butter instead. Each 15g serving delivers contains 85 calories, 7.5g of CBD and only 1g of sugar. That’s 6g of sugar per 100g which is comparable to most PB’s on the market, but the extra CBD kick is well worth it!
  • CBD Whey Protein: From all the CBD brands we’ve reviewed, Naturecan is the first company to launch a CBD infused whey protein. It’s fair to say that it probably has a lot to do with the fact that the founder Andrew Duckworth is the former CEO of Myprotein, the world’s #1 online health & nutrition retailer, and he clearly saw an opportunity with the fitness market segment. Each serving contains 20g of whey protein and 25mg of CBD. The combination of CBD and whey protein is a great move as protein helps you build and maintain muscle, while broad-spectrum CBD helps tackle next-day DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Syndrome) and inflammation. This is definitely next on our list of products to test as it’s a great way to get your daily CBD and protein intake post-workout.

Naturecan CBD E-Liquids

If you are already smoking, then you may want to check out Natuecan’s range of CBD e-liquids.

CBD vape oil is made using a similar process to standard CBD oil as it is derived from the hemp plant and uses CBD extract. To extract the CBD from cannabis sativa, a complex process involving CO2 extraction or solvent distillation (natural solvents like ethanol and olive oils or hydrocarbon solvents like butane or propane) is used, resulting in clean CBD extracts.

However, unlike CBD oil which use MCT or Olive oil as a carrier, CBD vape juices use thinning agents such as Vegetable Glycerin (known as VG), a thick, sweet liquid or Propylene Glycol (known as PG), a much thinner and tasteless liquid. It is the presence of these thinning agents that make the CBD juice ok to vape or inhale.

Products using Propylene Glycol tend to produce more of a “throat hit” than Vegetable Glycerin does, and as a result may simulate the feel of smoking better.

Naturecan CBD E-Liquids use high-quality ingredients, natural flavourings and an 80:20 PG:VG blend to maximise your enjoyment. As it has 80% of Propylene Glycol, it will give you than throat hit, but not as much as a product that would only contain PG.

Their CBD e-liquids come in 3 different strengths 250mg, 500mg and 1,000mg as well as 3 flavours including menthol, strawberry and citrus fruit.

We think that Naturecan has developed one of, if not the most comprehensive line of broad-spectrum CBD products which is truly impressive given the fact that the company has only been around since mid-2019. If you are looking for a solid range of broad-spectrum CBD products, we’d highly recommend checking them out as the vast majority of CBD brands on the market offer full-spectrum products which may not be suitable for everyone, especially if THC intake is a concern.

Lab Testing (10/10)

As a CBD company, Naturecan plays the transparency card with their customers. They guarantee that the product you are purchasing contains the exact amount of CBD advertised on their site, without any THC (the intoxicating compound in cannabis). Naturecan joined the Association for The Cannabinoid Industry (ACI) and the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis (CMC) to help build a better supply chain and raise the standards of the CBD industry in the UK.

Since many CBD products contain pesticides, herbicides, mould, fungi, dangerous mycotoxins and not the amount of CBD or THC advertised on their site, Naturecan CBD are working closely with Evio Labs and Green Leaf Labs, two US based companies offering analytical testing for CBD products.

In addition to being sourced and extracted from the highest-grade certified organic US hemp, they guarantee that their products are 100% organic and free of synthetic ingredients.

They allow customers to see their Certificates of Analysis online by going to the certificates of analysis page, which breaks down the potency of cannabinoids. The tests available to customers do not however highlight the presence of terpenes and flavonoids, as well as the absence of heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides or microbes, which we think is a shame but pretty standard in the industry.

The certificate of analysis for their Broad-Spectrum 1000mg CBD oil can be found here.

Farming (US Hemp)

Like most CBD companies, Naturecan does not grow its own hemp and relies on hemp farmers who are specialised in CBD and THC producing plants, which unlike fiber hemp plants that are used for the textile industry, need to be planted at wider intervals and harvested by hand, which requires specific farming methods.

Their CBD is sourced from Oregon, it meets the highest standards and is fully compliant under state law.

Why US hemp?

Hemp requires around 20-30 inches of rainfall during it’s growing season, either from rainfalls or via modern irrigation methods, and whilst the plant is largely unaffected by low temperatures and can even withstand frost down to -5°C, the ideal growing temperatures for good quality hemp are between 19-25°C.

The US is a large producer of hemp with Montana, Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina and Oregon being the 5 largest producers in the country. These five states are important location for hemp farming as they have the right regulations to grow hemp and the perfect climate.

Outside of the US, Europe is a big producer of hemp with France leading the charge, followed by Italy and the Netherlands.

For all these reasons, it makes the US and Oregon a great location for Naturecan to source their hemp from.

Hemp Preparation & Extraction

Once the plants have been harvested they are stored in a warehouse and left to dry. The dry hemp is then turned into a coarse powder – similar to coffee grounds – through a milling process which follows the strict standards of the hemp farming industry.

At that point, the hemp powder is transferred to the manufacturing and processing facility where it is needs to go through an extraction and purification process in order to remove all unwanted compounds and which produce a high-quality hemp extract which can then be used in oils, capsules, gummies and other CBD products.

Unlike many CBD products available on the market that use hemp produced at an industrial rate under very high temperatures to speed up the extraction process, but which ultimately degrades the quality of the CBD extract, Love CBD’s production method are clean and efficient as they use supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as an extraction method. This is similar to most of the brands in our top 10.

CO2 extraction (known as supercritical CO2 extraction) seems to be the gold-standard method of extraction in the industry. It uses carbon dioxide (CO2) and a series of pressurized chambers to expose the CO2 to high pressure and low temperatures. By holding the CO2 at a specific temperature and pressure which is above its standard critical state, it becomes liquid and acts as a solvent.

This method presents many advantages:

  • Safe for human consumption
  • CBD molecules are preserved
  • Environmentally friendly
  • CO2 extraction is sustainable

The final product that comes from the distillation process comprises of 99%+ CBD, is then used by Naturecan and incorporated into their various CBD oils.

Testing

Many products on the market contain pesticides, herbicides, mould, fungi and dangerous mycotoxins and for these reasons, Naturecan CBD products go through a rigorous process to ensure they are tested for quality and potency. To do so, they use cutting-edge testing equipment and work with Proverde Labs, a US based company offering analytical testing for CBD products, to test all their products. The tests carried out focus on various dimensions to guarantee the quality and safety of each batch.

  • Over 200 different pesticides
  • Heavy Metals like Arsenic, Lead, or Mercury
  • Aflatoxins and Mycotoxins
  • Terpenes
  • Microbes

Cannabinoids Test: The Cannabinoid test allows Naturecan to accurately determinate the concentration of each cannabinoid in their product. This not only helps them ensure that the correct level of CBD is present within the oil (e.g. 3% concentration vs 10%), but it also gives customers full-transparency regarding what other cannabinoids – including CBG, CBC and CBDV – are present. This is critical as these additional cannabinoids can boost the effectiveness of a CBD oil when compared to just CBD alone. This is what is known as the ‘entourage effect’.

On top of looking for the presence of other cannabinoids, Naturecan check that there aren’t any illegal cannabinoids present such as THC, CBN or THCV.

Terpenes Test: Terpenes are produced by the cannabis flower in the same way cannabinoids are, and they are responsible for giving CBD oil its individual flavour profile. You are already familiar with them as terpenes are what give a lemon its citrusy smell.

When it comes to CBD oil, not only do terpenes determine the flavour and smell of the oil, but they also work together with cannabinoids to enhance the effectiveness of the CBD oil. So terpenes are also part of the ‘entourage effect’.

The key terpenes found in CBD oil are Myrcene (known to have relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties), Limonene (anti-fungal and antibacterial properties), Pinene (anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties), Linalool (stress-relieving and anti-depressant properties), Caryophyllene (known to reduce anxiety and inflammation) or Humulene (anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties).

Flavonoids Test: Flavonoids are phytonutrients found in the leaves, flowers and trichomes of the cannabis plant. They play a role in the plant pigmentation, taste and smell and along with cannabinoids and terpenes, they bind with cannabinoid receptors to contribute to the ‘entourage effect’.

Heavy Metals Test: Hemp, like every other plant, tends to absorb heavy metals from the soil, water and air. These heavy metals – which include arsenic, mercury, lead or cadmium – can be passed into the cannabis extract if present in the hemp, resulting in the consumer absorbing some of it into their own system. Due to the high toxicity of these heavy metals, human consumption could lead to serious health consequences and this is why Naturecan CBD extracts are screened for these heavy metals to ensure their products are safe for human consumption.

Pesticides Test: Whilst pesticides are used in many forms of commercial farming, they are known to cause serious harm to the health of consumers, including cancer and mutation of their DNA, resulting in certain diseases. Whilst Naturecan’s hemp is grown organically without the use of pesticides, they test their CBD extracts for 67 different pesticides to ensure their products are clean and safe to consume.

Microbiological Test: To avoid any risk of microbes such as Shiga toxin E. coli, salmonella, or Listeria being present in their CBD extracts, which could lead to serious illnesses and health complications, Naturecan CBD products got through microbiological tests to ensure they are microbe free.

Residual Solvents Test: Solvents such as butane and ethanol can be used to extract cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids from the cannabis plant as well as during the filtration process, so it is key for CBD manufacturers to ensure that there are no residual traces of these solvents in their CBD extracts. Although Naturecan use supercritical CO2 during their extraction and filtration process, it is vital for them to test their CBD extracts for solvents such as ethanol, benzene, propane or methanol which could come from a contaminated soil from nearby farms.

Mycotoxins Test: Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain moulds and fungi which can cause cancer and mutation of your DNA. Seeing as mould can grow on a variety of different crops, including hemp, it is vital for CBD manufacturers to run mycotoxins test on their CBD extracts. Naturecan CBD currently tests for the 5 main mycotoxins including Aflatoxin B1, Aflatoxin B2, Aflatoxin G1, Aflatoxin G2 and Ochratoxin A, to ensure their products are clean and safe to consume.

They do allow customers to see the Certificates of Analysis online, which break down these tests. See their certificates of analysis page.
