Medterra CBD: Our Honest Review

Founded in 2017 by Jay Hartenbach and headquartered in Irvine, California, Medterra CBD was born out Jay’s enduring passion regarding the incredible benefits of CBD.

Their Hemp is grown in the US (Kentucky) and the company use a CO2 extraction process to produce their broad-spectrum and CBD isolate products.

Unlike other companies who have primarily developed full-spectrum CBD products, Medterra have focused on THC, THCa, THCv and CBDa free product ranges with an emphasis on CBD isolate and broad-spectrum CBD containing a powerful amount of CBG.

Medterra CBD oil is made of CBD islolate and broad-spectrum CBD and contains no artificial preservatives, no GMOs and no pesticides. Their broad-spectrum product has all the other all-natural hemp extracts such as CBN (Cannabinol), CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBT (Cannabitriol), as well as the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids which can be found in full-spectrum CBD, but they are free from THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBDa (Cannabidiolic acid).

For their broad-spectrum CBD, Medterra have focused on maximising the entourage effect – a physiological phenomenon wherein the properties of active hemp compounds appear to be more powerful when consumed together rather than by themselves individually – through the preservation of synergy between the plants cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids.

This has been achieved by creating a unique 1:1 blend of CBD and CBG by using a new extraction method which preserves the amount of CBG and that would have otherwise been converted into other cannabinoids.

Their products are all derived from organic hemp plants that are grown under the highest agricultural directives in Kentucky (US) and their products are made in the US.

Medterra CBD oil is vegan friendly, gluten-free, organic, GMO free, lab tested and contains zero THC, CBN & THCV, ensuring you get the purest CBD possible.

Medterra CBD oil was tested by myself and the rest of the CBD Unboxed team for a period of 2 weeks. Our review of Medterra covers 7 key metrics and at the end of this article we also recommend what we believe to be the best CBD products from Medterra:

So now you’re a bit more familiar with Medterra, let’s dive into this review to see how the CBD Unboxed team rated their products.

Medterra CBD is a great option for those looking to get all the benefits of CBD and CBG, without the potential downsides linked to THC and drug tests.

Medterra CBD Review

8.2

Medterra CBD has been officially tested by the CBD Unboxed team and products have not been gifted by the brand. As such, this review is 100% independent and based on our personal findings.

The CBD Unboxed Story

I founded CBD Unboxed because I suffer from bilateral femoroacetabular impingement (known as FAI), a painful condition in which excess bone grows on top of the femur (hip joint), causing the bone to take on an irregular shape.

Because they do not fit together perfectly, the bones rub together during movement. Over time, this rubbing can damage joints, cause pain, and lead to hip arthritis.

To manage my pain and avoid relying on traditional pain relievers with side effects, I turned to more natural products and found CBD to be a godsend. I have been using CBD for 5 years and wanted to share my experience so you too can discover the health benefits of CBD, from pain relief and improved sleep to reduced anxiety and depression. If you want to learn more about the benefits of CBD. If you want to find out more about how you could benefit from CBD, check out this article on the effects of CBD.

Our Review: Medterra 10% CBD Oil

The test carried out by the CBD Unboxed team focused on Medterra CBD Oil 3000mg (10% concentration with MCT oil carrier) which is made using CBD isolate, a crystalline powder that contains 99%+ pure CBD. As a result, it does not contain any of the other natural hemp extracts or any of the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids which can be found in broad and full-spectrum products. It is also 100% THC-free and as such, it does not benefit from the entourage effect.

During our two-week product review, we took 20mg of CBD in the morning on an empty stomach, followed by 10mg at lunchtime and a further 10mg an hour before bedtime, giving us a total of 40mg of CBD per day.

The characteristics of their 10% CBD oil are detailed below.

So how well did Medterra CBD isolate perform in our review?

Product Efficacy (7/10)

Good CBD Oil for Pain Relief

If you’re looking to use CBD oil for its analgesic (i.e. to relieve pain) and anti-inflammatory properties, look no further than Medterra 10% CBD oil, as it is a solid product and one of the best CBD oils available in the UK.

Just leave Medterra CBD oil under your tongue for 30-60 seconds. This allows for rapid absorption into the bloodstream and in most cases you should start to feel the benefits of this product within 20-30 minutes.

By taking 40mg of their CBD oil, broken down throughout the day (morning, lunchtime, evening), it provided me with incredible pain relief and it allowed me to simply get on with my day without having to worry too much about hip pain or discomfort. I was able to stay active during our two-week product review, and even on days I increased my physical activity, I was able to perform with little to no discomfort.

Simply put, this is one of the best CBD oils I have used in the last 5 years. Best of all, I was able to quit taking traditional painkillers, which is a win for my book when you know how they can harm you in the long run, especially when it comes to your gut microbiome.

As a final point, it would be interesting to test their 2000mg broad-spectrum CBD+CBG (6% concentration) to see if the 1:1 ratio has an impact on the quality and duration of the pain relief.

Excellent Relaxing Properties

So how did Medterra 10% CBD oil perform when it comes to improving sleep?

CBD works with the human body to decrease stress and lower anxiety levels. These responses indirectly improve your sleep. In the 1990s, researchers confirmed the body has an endocannabinoid system or ECS, a complex cell-signalling system consisting of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes. Scientists believe it plays many roles, including maintaining balance in the body. When it comes to sleep, the ECS helps regulate sleep and sleep cycles.

Not surprisingly, Medterra CBD oil performed well in terms of allowing me to feel relaxed in the evening and to fall asleep quickly. So if insomnia or poor sleep is affecting your life, Medterra CBD isolate could be a good option for you.

Taste (9/10)

Whilst the most popular way to consume CBD is by using CBD tincture (oil), they often have a more earthy, nutty, woody or grass-like taste which is down to the fact the product is natural, safe, and non-toxic.

Taste: A Pleasant Flavour Profile

After taking Medterra CBD 3,000mg CBD oil (10% concentration in 30ml bottle) for two weeks, it is fair to say that it tastes much better than most CBD brands in our Top 10. As a matter of fact, it’s almost completely tasteless and won’t leave you with an aftertaste in your mouth!

This is down to two factors:

  • Oil Carrier: The oil carrier can play a major role in the taste of a CBD oil and since Medterra uses MCT oil instead of Hempseed oil, it does help with the taste.
  • CBD Isolate: The main factor however is down to the fact that this is a CBD isolate product which means it is not only free of cannabinoids, but also free of terpenes and flavonoids. Terpenes are compounds responsible for the aroma and flavours of cannabis whilst flavonoids give the plants their pigmentation and are also responsible for some of its flavour profile. By taking out all terpenes, flavonoids, chlorophyll and plant waxes, an almost tasteless CBD oil is created.

Value for Money (9/10)

Medterra is a great value for money CBD oil and one of the cheapest in our Top 10.

A person between 150 and 240 lbs may need between 20mg and 40mg of CBD per day depending on the severity of their symptoms. A 30ml bottle of their 3000mg CBD tincture (retail: £89.99) will therefore last between 75 and 150 days and cost between £0.60 and £1.20 per day (with free shipping), which we think is incredible value for money especially when compared to other CBD brands in our Top 10.

Based on 20mg of CBD per day, here’s how the Top CBD brands reviewed by our team stack-up:

Cost/Day Buy
Medterra £0.60 BUY NOW
Canna Union £0.67 BUY NOW
Honest Hemp £0.78 BUY NOW
Holistic Hemp £0.91 BUY NOW
Love CBD £1.00 BUY NOW
Naturecan £1.10 BUY NOW
Provacan £1.25 BUY NOW
VAAY £1.28 BUY NOW
Hempura £1.30 BUY NOW
Blessed CBD £1.50 BUY NOW
Bud & Tender £1.60 BUY NOW

However, seeing as the effects of the CBD may not last for more than 3 hours, you may need to increase your daily intake, either by taking more CBD in the morning and evening, or by taking CBD more regularly throughout the day. This is likely to be less practical but given the fact that its the best value for money CBD oil we’ve tried and tested, increasing dosage should only have a small impact on your average cost per day.

Product Range (7/10)

Medterra have focused on developing a comprehensive range of quality broad-spectrum and CBD isolate products which are ideal for customers looking for THC free options.

We love the fact that Medterra have decided to focus on THC free oils and capsules to differentiate their products from their main competitors. If you are looking for a broad-spectrum or a CBD isolate, we’d highly recommend checking them out as the vast majority of CBD brands on the market offer full-spectrum products which may not be suitable for everyone, especially if drug tests are a concern.

Medterra Pure CBD Oil (Isolate)

The most popular product of Medterra is their CBD isolate oils which is made with 99%+ CBD from organically-grown US hemp (Kentucky). The only other ingredient in this oil is MCT coconut oil (Medium Chain Triglyceride), which allows for a more effective and diffused absorption.

As a CBD isolate product, it does not have any of the natural hemp extracts such as CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) or CBT (Cannabicitran), nor does it contain any of the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids. It’s also THC, CBN & THCv free, meaning that you get the purest CBD possible with no THC whatsoever.

Their CBD isolate oil is available in three different strengths and come in 30ml bottles which explains the low concentration:

As all their CBD oils come in 10ml bottle, the strength of the CBD will differ for each product.

CBD (mg) Type* Price BUY
500mg Isolate £26.99 BUY
1000mg Isolate £44.99 BUY
3000mg Isolate £89.99 BUY

*(FS) – Full Spectrum / (BS) – Broad Spectrum / (Isolate) – CBD Isolate

Medterra CBD oil 500mg retails at £26.99 (£0.054 per mg) whilst Medterra CBD oil 1000mg and Medterra CBD oil 3000mg retail at £44.99 (£0.045 per mg) and £89.99 (£0.030 per mg) respectively.

When comparing the price and strength of their CBD isolate products, going for a higher potency works out cheaper in the long run as a person using 20g of CBD per day will spend £0.60 per day using their 3000mg CBD oil and £1.08 per day when using their 500mg oil, a saving of 44% when going for the higher potency oil.

Medterra Broad-Spectrum & CBG Oil

On top of their pure CBD oil, Medterra have developed two other product lines for customers who want THC free oil but also want to benefit from the entourage effect coming from other cannabinoids.

Ultra Broad-Spectrum CBD – Unlike their isolate tinctures which contains only CBD, Medterra broad-spectrum tinctures contain CBD with additional beneficial compounds such as CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, and natural terpenes. Medterra Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil 1000mg and Medterra Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil 2000mg are equivalent to 3.2% and 6.4% concentration products and they come in a delicious citrus flavour.

CBD+CBG Oil – If you want a truly differentiated oil, you may want to check out Medterra CBG Oil 1000mg and Medterra CBG Oil 2000mg which contain CBG (Cannabigerol), a compound known as the “mother of all cannabinoids”. CBG isn’t usually present in broad and full spectrum products as it is converted to CBD and other minor cannabinoids within the hemp plant, making it very difficult to find in hemp plant. Medterra have developed their own extraction technology which allows them to cleanly extract CBG in order to incorporate it in their CBD oil, with a CBD to CBG ratio of 1:1, meaning that their 1000mg bottle will contain 500mg of CBD and 500mg of CBG.

As all their CBD oils come in 30ml bottle, the strength of the CBD will differ for each product.

CBD (mg) Type* Price BUY
1000mg BS £53.99 BUY
1000mg CBG+CBD £71.99 BUY
2000mg BS £89.99 BUY
2000mg CBG+CBD £116.99 BUY

*(FS) – Full Spectrum / (BS) – Broad Spectrum / (Isolate) – CBD Isolate

Price wise, their broad-spectrum oil is more expensive than their CBD isolate as the 30ml bottle of 1000mg retails at £53.99 which works out £1.08 per day based on 20mg of CBD. In comparison, their isolate product costs £0.90 per day based on the same dosage.

Their CBG+CBD oil retails at £71.99 for the 1000mg bottle and £116.99 for the 2000mg version, which is even more expensive as their CBD isolate and broad spectrum CBD oils at £1.42 per day compared to £0.90 for their isolate product and £1.08 for their broad-spectrum oil.

Medterra CBD Gel Capsules

If the taste of CBD oil isn’t your thing or you would prefer not to take CBD by using the a dropper and leaving the oil under the tongue, then you may want to check out Medterra CBD capsules, as you will be able to experience all the benefits of CBD without the downsides of CBD oil.

When buying their CBD gel capsules, be aware that the amount of CBD in each capsule will vary depending on which strength you go for:

CBD (mg) Type* Price BUY
750mg Isolate £40.99 BUY
1500mg Isolate £62.99 BUY

*(FS) – Full Spectrum / (BS) – Broad Spectrum / CBD Isolate

Choosing capsules is a great way to get your CBD intake and it’s incredibly travel friendly, the ideal solution for those who are always on the go.

As with other Medterra products, their capsules are made with Pure CBD (isolate) and contain no pesticides, herbicides, solvents or chemical fertilizers. They are sourced from organically grown, non-GMO, pesticide-free hemp plants that have been grown in the US and have also been independently lab tested for potency and purity.

Note: As the gel capsule is made from bovine gelatine, this product is not vegan friendly.

Medterra CBD Topicals

If your aim is to improve muscle recovery post workout, treat an inflamed muscle or tendon or simply to look after your skin, then we would recommend looking at Medterra CBD creams, a range of multi-purpose cannabis-infused creams that contain CBD extracts of cannabis, as well as other organic ingredients that help to soothe and nourish the skin.

  • Medterra Rapid Cooling CBD Cream contains CBD, MCT oil as well as grapefruit seed extract, vitamin C and menthol to provide a rapid cooling effect. However, whilst CBD creams are great, they are only for topical use and often need to be used in conjunction with other CBD products such as CBD oils or capsules.

Lab Testing (10/10)

As a CBD company, Medterra plays the transparency card with their customers. They guarantee that the product you are purchasing contains the exact amount of CBD advertised on their site, without any THC (the intoxicating compound in cannabis). As such, they have made a clear commitment to raising the bar of the quality of CBD products available in the US and worldwide.

Since many CBD products contain pesticides, herbicides, mould, fungi, dangerous mycotoxins and not the amount of CBD or THC advertised on their site, Medterra CBD are working closely with Proverde Labs, a US based company offering analytical testing for CBD products.

In addition to being sourced and extracted from the highest-grade certified organic US hemp, they guarantee that their products are 100% organic and free of synthetic ingredients.

They allow customers to see their Certificates of Analysis online by going to the certificates of analysis page, which breaks down the potency of cannabinoids. The tests available to customers do not however highlight the presence of terpenes and flavonoids, as well as the absence of heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides or microbes, which we think is a shame but pretty standard in the industry.

The certificate of analysis for their Broad-Spectrum 1000mg CBD oil can be found here.

Farming (US Hemp)

Like most CBD companies, Medterra CBD does not grow its own hemp and relies on hemp farmers who are specialised in CBD and THC producing plants, which unlike fiber hemp plants that are used for the textile industry, need to be planted at wider intervals and harvested by hand, which requires specific farming methods.

Their CBD is sourced from Kentucky and is fully compliant with the Kentucky Department of Agricultural Industrial Hemp Pilot Program and is certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority.

Why US hemp?

Hemp requires around 20-30 inches of rainfall during it’s growing season, either from rainfalls or via modern irrigation methods, and whilst the plant is largely unaffected by low temperatures and can even withstand frost down to -5°C, the ideal growing temperatures for good quality hemp are between 19-25°C.

The US is a large producer of hemp with Montana, Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina and Oregon being the 5 largest producers in the country. These five states are important location for hemp farming as they have the right regulations to grow hemp and the perfect climate.

Outside of the US, Europe is a big producer of hemp with France leading the charge, followed by Italy and the Netherlands.

For all these reasons, it makes the US and Kentucky a great location for Medterra to source their hemp from.

Hemp Preparation & Extraction

Once the plants have been harvested they are stored in a warehouse and left to dry. The dry hemp is then turned into a coarse powder – similar to coffee grounds – through a milling process which follows the strict standards of the hemp farming industry.

At that point, the hemp powder is transferred to the manufacturing and processing facility where it is needs to go through an extraction and purification process in order to remove all unwanted compounds and which produce a high-quality hemp extract which can then be used in oils, capsules, gummies and other CBD products.

Unlike many CBD products available on the market that use hemp produced at an industrial rate under very high temperatures to speed up the extraction process, but which ultimately degrades the quality of the CBD extract, Medterra’s production method are clean and efficient as they use supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as an extraction method. This is similar to most of the brands in our top 10.

CO2 extraction (known as supercritical CO2 extraction) seems to be the gold-standard method of extraction in the industry. It uses carbon dioxide (CO2) and a series of pressurized chambers to expose the CO2 to high pressure and low temperatures. By holding the CO2 at a specific temperature and pressure which is above its standard critical state, it becomes liquid and acts as a solvent.

This method presents many advantages:

  • Safe for human consumption
  • CBD molecules are preserved
  • Environmentally friendly
  • CO2 extraction is sustainable

The final product that comes from the distillation process comprises of 99%+ CBD, is then used by Medterra and incorporated into their various CBD oils.

Testing

Many products on the market contain pesticides, herbicides, mould, fungi and dangerous mycotoxins and for these reasons, Medterra products go through a rigorous process to ensure they are tested for quality and potency. To do so, they use cutting-edge testing equipment and work with Proverde Labs, a US based company offering analytical testing for CBD products, to test all their products. The tests carried out focus on various dimensions to guarantee the quality and safety of each batch.

  • Over 200 different pesticides
  • Heavy Metals like Arsenic, Lead, or Mercury
  • Aflatoxins and Mycotoxins
  • Terpenes
  • Microbes

Below are some of their latest customer reviews.

Love it! No bitter flavor you can sometimes get from other brands products. Dropper is very well marked making it easy to dial in a preferred dose!

Medterra is a different brand than what I was using. Same strength, but doesn’t have a strong taste like the previous brand. I feel like it may even work better too. I’m glad I tried Medterra. It was more reasonably priced as well. I will buy Medterra again!

Medterra Review: Top 10 Products

Medterra CBD Review: The Verdict

In terms of how Medterra compares to other brands in our Top 10 CBDs oils, we simply cannot fault them for the quality and the incredible value for money of their CBD isolate. We were a little disappointed by the fact that the effects do not seem to last as long as other CBD oils, which may be down to the fact that this is a CBD isolate product and does not contain any of the other cannabinoids, but as highlighted in this review and judging by their customer reviews, this remains a great CBD oil.
