PureKana CBD: Our Honest Review

PureKana was launched in 2017 by Cody Alt and is one of the largest CBD brands in the US. The company is based based in Scottsdale, Arizona, and its sole focus is to develop a variety of high-grade CBD products to enhance the overall wellness of its customers.

Over the last few years, the company has been featured globally in publications such as Forbes, Business Insider and Yahoo Finance.

PureKana CBD oil is made of full-spectrum CBD extracts and contains no artificial preservatives, no GMOs and no pesticides. Their full-spectrum product have all the natural hemp extracts such as CBD (Cannabidiol), CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBT (Cannabicitran), as well as the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids. Their oils also contain trace amounts of THC.

Their hemp is grown in Kentucky (USA) and they use a supercritical CO2 extraction process to produce their full and full-spectrum CBD oils.

When buying PureKana CBD oil, you can be sure it is of the highest quality and potency as they only use the very best hemp plants and have developed their own propriety strains which have been derived from specially bred hemp plants that are grown on licensed, organic farms. Their all-natural hemp is free of pesticides, toxins, herbicides, and heavy metals.

All their products focus on maximising the entourage effect – a physiological phenomenon wherein the properties of active hemp compounds appear to be more powerful when consumed together rather than by themselves individually – through the preservation of synergy between the plants cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids.

PureKana CBD oil was tested by myself and the rest of the CBD Unboxed team for a period of 2 weeks. Our review of PureKana CBD covers 7 key metrics and at the end of this article we also recommend what we believe to be the best CBD products from PureKana.

So now you’re a bit more familiar with PureKana, let’s dive into this review to see how the CBD Unboxed team rated their products.

We reviewed PureKana CBD and compared it to the other brands in our Top 10 to see how it compares when it comes to its efficacy, taste and value for money.

PureKana CBD Review Score

6.9

PureKana CBD has been officially tested and reviewed by the CBD Unboxed team. Products have not been gifted by the brand and as such, this review is 100% independent and based on our personal findings.

The CBD Unboxed Story

I founded CBD Unboxed because I suffer from bilateral femoroacetabular impingement (known as FAI), a painful condition in which extra bone grows on the head of the femur (hip joint), giving the bones an irregular shape.

Because they do not fit together perfectly, the bones rub against each other during movement. Over time this friction can damage the joint, causing pain and resulting in arthritis of the hip joint.

To manage my pain and to avoid relying on traditional painkillers which have known side effects, I turned to more natural products and found CBD to be a godsend. I have been using CBD for the past 5 years and want to share my experience, so you too can experience the health benefits of CBD which are wide ranging – from pain relief and improved sleep, to reduced anxiety and depression. Our Review: PureKana 10% CBD Oil

The review carried out by the CBD Unboxed team focused on PureKana CBD Oil 1000mg (3% concentration with MCT oil carrier), which contains all the natural hemp extracts such as Cannabidiol (CBD), CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBT (Cannabicitran), as well as the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids.

As it is a full-spectrum CBD oil, it also contains trace amounts of THC, but it is non-psychoactive as the hemp plant used to produce the CBD extracts contain less than 0.2% THC.

During the two-week period, we took 20mg of CBD in the morning on an empty stomach, followed by 10mg at lunchtime and a further 10mg an hour before bedtime, giving us a total of 40mg of CBD per day.

So how well did PureKana full-spectrum CBD perform in our review?

Product Efficacy (8/10)

PureKana CBD Oil for Pain Relief

If you’re looking to use CBD oil for its analgesic (i.e. to relieve pain) and anti-inflammatory properties, PureKana CBD oil is a good option, as their products are some of the best ones available in the UK.

By taking 40mg of their CBD oil, broken down throughout the day (morning, lunchtime, evening), it provided me with good pain relief and it allowed me to simply get on with my day without having to worry about hip pain or discomfort. I was able to remain active throughout the two week product review, and even on days where I increased my physical activity, I was able to perform with little to no discomfort.

Despite the fact that this is only a 3% concentration oil, which means I had to take more drops compare to a 10% concentration product, it performed well and I was able to stop taking traditional painkillers, which is a win in my book especially when you know how bad these can be for you over the long run.

As a final point, it would be interesting to test their higher concentration products, especially PureKana CBD oil 5000mg (8% concentration) as arthritis of the hip joint is incredibly painful and it would be good to see how higher strength products perform in comparison to their 3% concentration. One for our next review.

PureKana CBD Oil for Stress & Sleep

So how did their CBD perform when it comes to reducing stress or improving sleep?

CBD works with the human body to increase calm, decrease stress, and lower anxiety levels. These responses indirectly improve your sleep. In the 1990s, researchers confirmed the body has an endocannabinoid system or ECS, a complex cell-signalling system consisting of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes. Scientists believe it plays many roles, including maintaining balance in the body. When it comes to sleep, the ECS helps regulate sleep and sleep cycles.

PureKana CBD oil has helped me feel calmer in the evening and fall asleep faster. It’s also helped me stay asleep throughout the night and I’ve woken up feeling more refreshed most morning. The one drawback of using CBD oil just before going to bed is that my dreams tend to be incredibly vivid, something I’ve experienced with most full-spectrum CBD oils.

Other Benefits of PureKana CBD

CBD is believed to interact with specific receptors, specifically the CB1R and CB2R.

  • CB1 receptors, which are located in various regions of the body, with a large concentration in the central nervous system and brain, co-ordinate mood, emotion, appetite, and other functions.
  • CB2 receptors are more commonly found in the immune system and are responsible for controlling inflammation and pain. CBD stimulates these receptors and induces the body to release serotonin.

Serotonin, or 5-HT, is a neurotransmitter that carries signals from one neuron to the other. CBD increases the level of serotonin, which, in return, helps reduce pain and stress, as well as provide a range of other health benefits, which include:

  • CBD for Anxiety: CBD has both anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties, and can be a great alternative to anxiety medications which have known side-effects.
  • CBD for Headaches: CBD reduces the frequency of headaches as well as reduce stress and improve sleep, two major triggers of headaches. But CBD also has strong analgesic (pain relief) and antiemetic (prevent vomiting) properties which can help people with headache disorders during an attack.
  • CBD for Arthritis: CBD has antiarthritic, analgesic (pain relief) as well as anti-inflammatory properties and as such is a great option for people suffering from arthritis.
  • CBD for Cancer: CBD helps relieve some of the symptoms of cancer as well as reducing the side of effects of cancer medication such as nausea, vomiting and pain.
  • CBD for Epilepsy: CBD helps reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures in epileptic patients, and may also counteract some of the side effects of traditional anti-epileptic.

So if pain, insomnia, stress or anxiety are impacting your daily life, I would highly recommend you check out PureKana CBD products.

Taste (7/10)

Whilst the most popular way to consume CBD is by using CBD tincture (oil), they often have a more earthy, nutty, woody or grass-like taste which is down to the fact the product is natural, safe, and non-toxic.

A Nice Flavour Profile

After taking PureKana 3% CBD oil for two weeks, it is fair to say that it tastes exactly as we would expect full-spectrum CBD to taste: a little grassy. The first thing we noticed is that their CBD oil is quite light in colour, which is surprising for a full-spectrum CBD oil. The lighter colour usually indicates a more palatable CBD oil – which was definitely the case here as they CBD oil has a rather nice flavour profile.

When swallowing the oil after leaving it under the tongue for 30-60 seconds, you’ll experience a light grassy /earthy but no bitter aftertaste, which is a win in our book! So whilst it tastes as we would expect a full-spectrum unflavoured CBD oil to taste, we simply can’t hold it against PureKana as their oil works very well for pain relief and sleep.

The lighter flavour profile is unexpected and could be explained by the fact that PureKana uses an MCT oil carrier (Coconut oil), which tends to improve the taste of the oil and make it more gentle on the palette.

Regardless of the taste, we think that CBD oil is the best way to consume CBD as it gets absorbed quickly into the bloodstream in comparison to other products such as CBD capsules or CBD gummies, which have to go through the digestive track.

Value for Money (5/10)

Whilst we love PureKana 3% CBD oil for its efficacy and its taste, it is unfortunately one of the most expensive CBD oils on the market.

A person between 150 and 240 lbs may need between 20mg and 40mg of CBD per day depending on the severity of their symptoms. A 30ml bottle of their 1000mg CBD oil (retail: £101.00) will therefore last between 25 and 50 days and cost between £2.02 and £4.04 per day (with free shipping), which we think is incredibly expensive, especially when compared to other CBD brands in our Top 10.

So heavy CBD users will need to place an order every month, whilst mild users may be able to push this to 2 months.

Based on 20mg of CBD per day, here’s how the Top CBD brands reviewed by our team stack-up:

Alternative CBD Oils

Whilst PureKana is a great option, a number of other CBD brands in our Top 10 are as efficient, great tasting and better value for money. The alternative oils we would recommend include:

Product Range (8/10)

Whilst PureKana have only been in business since 2017, they have already developed a wide range of high-quality products, including CBD oils, CBD capsules, CBD gummies, CBD creams as well as CBD vape pens.

PureKana CBD Oils

In the CBD oils range, PureKana has focused on both natural and flavoured full-spectrum CBD oils, each available in different strengths and two bottle sizes – 30ml and 60ml.

Their full-spectrum CBD oils are made from organically-grown US hemp mixed with an MCT oil (carrier). Their oils have all the natural hemp extracts such as CBDv (Cannabidivarin), CBG (Cannabigerol), CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBT (Cannabicitran), as well as the naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and Omega acids. They also contain small amounts of THC, CBN & THCV, ensuring you get the purest CBD possible with a legal amount of THC.

Their CBD oil is incredibly pure and comes from organic, non-GMO hemp. As all their CBD oils come in 30ml or 60ml bottles, so be sure to check the amount of CBD and the size of each bottle as the concentration will vary greatly depending on the oil you choose.

PureKana Flavoured CBD Oils

If you do not like the natural taste of hemp and prefer flavoured oils instead, you’ll be pleased to know that PureKana have launched 4 different flavours – Vanilla, Citrus, Mint & Fruity – and 4 different strengths – 300mg, 600mg, 1000mg and 1600mg. Below are their 1000mg oils.

Lab Testing (10/10)

A Transparent CBD Company

As a CBD company, PureKana plays the transparency card with their customers and have made a clear commitment to raising the bar of the quality of CBD products available in the US.

Since many CBD products contain pesticides, herbicides, mould, fungi and dangerous mycotoxins, PureKana are working closely with DB Labs SLV, a leading CBD laboratory testing service, to test all their CBD oils.

In addition to being sourced and extracted from the highest-grade certified organic US hemp, they guarantee that their products are 100% organic and free of synthetic ingredients.

They allow customers to see their Certificates of Analysis online on each of their product pages, which break down the potency of cannabinoids, the presence of terpenes and flavonoids, as well as the absence of heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides or microbes.

Hemp Origin: US Hemp

Like most CBD companies, PureKana does not grow its own hemp and relies on hemp farmers who are specialised in CBD and THC producing plants, which unlike fibre hemp plants that are used for the textile industry, need to be planted at wider intervals and harvested by hand, which requires specific farming methods.

Their hemp is sourced from the US and grown under the highest agricultural directives in the country.

Why US hemp?

Hemp requires around 20-30 inches of rainfall during it’s growing season, either from rainfalls or via modern irrigation methods, and whilst the plant is largely unaffected by low temperatures and can even withstand frost down to -5°C, the ideal growing temperatures for good quality hemp are between 19-25°C.

The US is a large producer of hemp with Montana, Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina and Oregon being the 5 largest producers in the country. These five states are important location for hemp farming as they have the right regulations to grow hemp and the perfect climate.

Outside of the US, Europe is a big producer of hemp with France leading the charge, followed by Italy and the Netherlands.

For all these reasons, it makes the US a great location for PureKana CBD to source their hemp from.

Hemp Preparation & Extraction

Once the plants have been harvested they are stored in a warehouse and left to dry. The dry hemp is then turned into a coarse powder – similar to coffee grounds – through a milling process which follows the strict standards of the hemp farming industry.

At that point, the hemp powder is transferred to the manufacturing and processing facility where it is needs to go through an extraction and purification process in order to remove all unwanted compounds and which produce a high-quality hemp extract which can then be used in oils, capsules, gummies and other CBD products.

Unlike many CBD products available on the market that use hemp produced at an industrial rate under very high temperatures to speed up the extraction process, but which ultimately degrades the quality of the CBD extract, PureKana’s production method are clean and efficient as they use a supercritical CO2 extraction method.

Lab Testing

Many products on the market contain pesticides, herbicides, mould, fungi and dangerous mycotoxins and for these reasons, Purekana CBD products go through a rigorous process to ensure they are tested for quality and potency. To do so, they use cutting-edge testing equipment and work with DB Labs SLV, a leading CBD laboratory testing service, to test all their CBD products. The tests carried out focus on various dimensions to guarantee the quality and safety of each batch.

  • Over 200 different pesticides
  • Heavy Metals like Arsenic, Lead, or Mercury
  • Aflatoxins and Mycotoxins
  • Terpenes
  • Microbes

Customer Reviews

By focusing on raising the quality of CBD in the US and providing customers with great quality information and customer service, PureKana has built a great reputation and has a loyal customer base. The company has over 6,000 verified reviews on Trustpilot, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 5.

Love the products! I use the sleep-aid gummies, delta 8 gummies, pain relief topical and CBD vegan gummies. All great products!

I enjoy your gummies the best. Have tried a few different kinds. Yours are always fresh, arrive fairly quickly. Been a customer for a few yrs. Have only had 1 delivery that was a bit backed up. I’m still working w/the Sleep gummies dose. The taste is good, not sure why you use sugar (stimulate) to go to sleep but that’s where I’m having the challenge is how many will it actually take to assist in going & staying asleep.

PureKana CBD Review: The Verdict

In terms of how it compares to other brands in our Top 10 CBDs oils, we simply cannot fault PureKana for the quality and efficacy of both their CBD oils. However, these are far from being the best value for money CBD products on the market and are 2 to 3 times more expensive than other CBD brands we’ve tried and tested. We also think it’s a shame PureKana is currently only available in the US, and we hope they’ll launch a UK focused product range soon.
